I'm with these two, I love your long ones and the single ones because they have the perfect number of panels for the joke. You should look at my strips, they're really long but I think they get the humor across.

Use as many as you need to get your message / joke across. if you limit your panels you'll end up limiting what you can do.

I say however many you need to get the laugh! Though maybe I'd suggest that if it runs more than five, breaking it up into two lines.
